It has been an extremely long time since my last blog post. I entered the professional world after finishing my master’s degree and I ended up as a data scientist and machine learning engineer. I’m covering both since I’m not a huge fan of tight specializations. I’m quite lucky that my working place allows you to work in different areas at once. In fact, I’m starting to do more data engineering since that’s an area I have no much experience in.

As a student I was aiming to work with robots. But my path evolved through machine learning and gaining some deeper knowledge in meta-learning in the end. I was driven more and more apart from robotics but nevertheless I really enjoyed that time. I met some wonderful people at the machine learning lab and wrote an awesome thesis. My plan was to proceed with a PhD degree but there were some issues with financial stuff at the university and I lost my perspective seat on the round table of cool people.

I was a bit devastated but I got some interesting job offers later on thanks to my work at the university. One was from IBM North America and the other came later (or more precisely: too late for me since I was already working at an e-commerce company) as a PhD position in the Netherlands. It seems weird and ungrateful, but I turned those excellent offers down because I didn’t want to move that far away from my family. Honestly, I was also a bit scared of big and too many changes in my life.

As already mentioned I started working for a small and nice e-commerce company at the recommender systems department. My work mainly consisted in data extraction, analysis and interpretation, prototyping, a/b-testing and software engineering in Python (microservices for recommender systems). I even worked as a product owner for a year. Sadly the company had to undergo some changes and my wonderful team left. So I left too and started to work for a famous German company at the recommender systems department as well.

But at some point I got bored. It seemed like I lost my appetite. Then I rediscovered this blog and it inspired me to continue writing about stuff I care for. And I still love robots and so does my son 🙂 So brace yourself because some nice blog post will be coming!
